Pushing the penny auction industry to the next level, Swipe Auctions has decided to offer one of the most prized sports cars in the world – an Audi R8 – on their premium auction site.
U.S. News And World Report ranks the Audi R8 in the top seven of the best exotic sports cars in the world, and notes that it has the same horsepower and torque as a Lamborghini Gallardo.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times had this to say about the car: “To drive it is to mind-meld with a sophisticated being that can be an unholy freakin' animal. James Cameron's film 'Avatar' dreams a world where humans can telepathically plug into beautiful blue creatures of extraordinary power and speed, with glittery feline eyes and rock-hard butts. Audi beat him to it.”
Swipe Auctions management said they decided to offer the new Audi as a way to demonstrate that the penny auction industry is ready to move beyond simple consumer electronics.
“When penny auctions first started, sticking with cameras, televisions, computers and other items that were easy to order from bulk shipping companies made sense,” said a company representative. “But now that it's clear that the industry is successful it's time to move on to bigger, better and more exciting auctions.”
Swipe Auctions is the first penny auction company to offer a product as valuable as an R8 – which retails at well over $100,000.
“We honestly don't know what the eventual price will be once the bidding is over,” a company representative said. “It's an entirely new level of auction and we are very curious to see what kind of reaction it will get from our members.”
Swipe Auctions is a penny auction site. Penny auctions are different from traditional online auctions such as eBay and have become very popular over the last 18 months. The way penny auctions work is that people buy packages of bids and then spend the bids on the auction of their choice. Every time someone places a bid the price goes up by one cent and more time is added to the clock. Whomever places the last bid before time runs out gets to purchase the product at the final price.
The company said they are still finalizing the terms and details of this special auction, which will be held at some point in the next two months.
“We are not going to rush into this,” a company representative stated. “This is going to be our most important auction ever, and we want to make sure we get it done right.”
