Recently released market study: Greece Telecommunications Report Q4 2010

Aug. 31, 2010 - PRLog -- Following the news that Greece would receive a three-year EUR110bn bailout and the announcement of tough austerity measures, things have simmered down, but Greece is still in choppy waters, as the ever increasing government bond yield testifies. The economy is not in good shape, and this will inevitably be seen in the telecoms sector. The effects, however, will be muted compared to many other industries, and operators' results for Q110 agree with this view.

The mobile market grew by an impressive 10.2% in 2009, a marked improvement on the 8.9% rise in 2008, despite the effects of the global recession. However, decline set in in Q110. The number of subscribers of all three mobile operators fell by more than 300,000, with Vodafone suffering the worst losses, of more than 500,000. In total the number of mobile subscribers in Greece fell by 1.3mn in Q110. The strong growth in 2009 suggested a degree of resilience to the unfavourable economic environment, and the Q110 decline is not necessarily a sign that the bottom is dropping out of the market. BMI had already said that we considered it possible that operators would use the expectations of negative results as an opportunity to spring clean their figures and cull inactive subscribers. With thre highest penetration rate in Western Europe, at more than 185% at the end of 2009, Greece remains dependant on the prepaid segment, which means many inactive subscribers are included in the operators' figures.

The broadband market, which is still dominated by 'traditional' fixed connections such as ADSL, while fibre and wireless connections form a small minority, grew by just over 19% in 2009, yielding a subscriber base of 2.18mn. As with mobile, this was a slightly stronger performance than in 2008, despite the recession. In Q110 growth continued.

The lack of verifiable data regarding mobile broadband use means we have not included subscribers to those services in these forecasts. However, if mobile data usage rates reported by operators are anything to go by, mobile broadband is poised to become a driving force in the market. The economic crisis may have put paid to that, but in the absence of any data negating our expectations, we see the market expanding by around 21% in 2010, enabling the penetration rate to rise to more than 23%. By the end of our forecast period in 2014, we see the broadband penetration rate rising beyond 33%.

The fixed-line market, after a period of rapid decline, seems to be stabilising. We expect the decline to continue, but at a slower and more manageable pace. OTE is still losing market share. The past few years have seen a marked increase in the number of unbundled local loops, and as more become available, so more customers are deserting OTE for alternative operators for their fixed-line calling needs. Although OTE is taking steps to stem the flow, we expect it to continue, although we may see the incumbent stabilise the exodus yet.
