UMSL Announces the Fall 2010 Monday Noon Series Events

The free arts and cultural series presented by the Center for the Humanities begins September 13

Aug. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- St. Louis, MO – The University of Missouri–St. Louis and its Center for the Humanities announces the Fall 2010 lineup for the Monday Noon Series. These free, open to the public, cultural lectures and performances focus on art, dance, history, literature, politics and many other exciting subjects. The interdisciplinary events are every Monday from 12:15–1:15 p.m. and take place in the J.C. Penney Conference Center on UMSL’s campus unless otherwise noted.

The series begins September 13 with Billie McKindra Phillips, docent for the St. Louis Art Museum, reading from her recently published collection of poetry, "Seconds of Joy." Phillips, a retired supervisor of art for the St. Louis Public Schools, will also share stories about the inspiration for her poems.

September events continue on the 20th with "Lincoln’s America." Judy Cook, nominee for Best Female Vocalist in Traditional Folk in Washington, D.C., will perform songs from and about Lincoln’s lifetime. Cook will also provide historical details about the songs and tunes, and encourage audience members to sing along.

On September 27, Yevonn Wilson-Ramsey, artist, scientific illustrator, and adjunct professor of art at St. Louis Community College, will present "The Art of Scientific Illustration." Wilson-Ramsey will take the audience on a behind-the-scenes tour of the world of scientific botanical illustration with a brief survey of botanical art as well as current working techniques and works in progress.

The Monday Noon Series continues every Monday through November 15, 2010. All events are free, open to the public and no registration is required. Light refreshments will be served. The Missouri Arts Council, the Regional Arts Commission of Saint Louis and Gallery 210 have provided financial assistance for this season.
