We expect assets in the Malaysian banking sector to expand by 7.5% in 2010, accelerating from 6.7% growth in 2009 as a result of the better economic backdrop and increased demand for Islamic finance. For 2011, we expect lower growth of 6.2% as a regional slowdown is forecast to occur due to Chinese weakness. We believe the Malaysian banking industry will perform well this year, with asset growth accelerating to 7.5%, up from 6.7% in 2009. We expect banks to continue to benefit in particular from robust demand for Islamic finance, which expanded by 31.7% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May 2010, considerably faster than the 17.5% expansion registered in the equivalent period a year earlier. Overall, Malaysian lenders enjoyed a 11.8% y-o-y rise in total loans in May, up from 9.2% in May 2009 when the economy was emerging from the doldrums. Given the positive outlook for 2010, we are forecast loan growth of 9.2% for the year, after 8.2% growth in 2009.
