The Tapas Capital of Spain

While the contest may be fiercely fought, Logrono is the best tapas destination in Spain.

Aug. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Tapas bars remain the ubiquitous eateries throughout Spain, but the question of which city is the king of tapas is an elusive one. Granada has strong claim as the spiritual home of the Tapa. Seville has busy old bars, but not necessarily the best food. San Sebastian's Tapas can be close to works of art.

But one of the unsung heroes is Logrono, the capital of La Rioja. The sheer density of Tapas bars here is unrivalled throughout the whole of Spain. There are almost 50 squeezed in to on block not much bigger than 4 tennis courts.

In the 100 steps it takes to travail Calle de Laurel, there are 24 tapas bar to pass. 13 in 50 paces along the Travesia del Luarel. And then about 13 more on completion of your circuit.

Hemingway made his way through these tapas bars during his Iberian days, while King Juan Carlos gave the town's tapas his royal approval.

This concentration of eateries grew from wine shops that sold Riojas during on these mediaeval streets. The wine business has now shifted leaving a strong concentration of tapas in its place.

With such a high density of businesses you may expect fierce competition, yet there is a perfect solution here, each bar specialises in just two or three dishes. “There are no rivals here”, as we settle down to a few bites and beers.

Bar Lorenzo specialises in grilled chorizo with garlic and paprika, alongside lamb kebabs served with a top secret sauce. The recipe for the sauce is said to have been passed down through the family. There is no will for the next in line in the family, simply a recipe that has sustained the family for generations.

Continuing the crawl the next bar specialises in Setas, which is a garlic mushroom served with shrimp. Opposite you can find some great shell food with razor clams cooked to perfection.

A strange delicacy is the lamb's intestines cooked at En Ascuas. Roasted in a wooden fuelled oven this dish is served with parsley and garlic sauce and the result is delicious.

If you are in the mood for with a little more heat then there is a wonderful little place to try the guingillas. An intense fiery pepper that is best washed down with a few beers.

Then there is the fish at Bodeguilla Los Rotos, which comes served with scrambled eggs.

But my favourite place along the strip must be La Universidad, which draws you in with the sights of huge Octopus. Here the Octopus is served smeared with paprika alongside some baby squid.

Really I have barely began to touch on what the region has to offer, and the vast array off delicacies available.

From the Spanish villas here you can easily spend your day here trawling from bar to bar taking in some of the finest tapas Spain has to offer, washing it down with crisp beer or a nice Rioja.

For all foodies and oenophiles a visit to Logrono is a must.
