Aug. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- It has been announced that a collection of almost 200 shoes from the Vivienne Westwood archive collection will be put on display in London’s Selfridges Department Store this week. The exhibition entitled ‘Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition 1973-2010’ will show the extensive collection of the inspirational designer’s iconic collection of the last four decades.
Westwood is a legendary British designer and the exhibition will showcase the very best of her designs. From those towering Super Elevated Gillie design platforms that famously toppled Naomi Campbell on the catwalk in Paris in 1993, to the Pirate boots, whose popularity has transcended decades from their launch in 1981. Westwood specialises in creating character shoes, shoes that have a personality all of their own, whether it be from ballet pumps to platforms, they all have their unique statement to make.
The shoes will be displayed in the stores’ Ultralounge space from Thursday (26.08.10) and are expected to receive large amounts of visitors. A spokesman from the department store has said that the ‘exhibition traces the exceptional success of Westwood's career to date and presents her outstanding artistic individuality. Illustrating her defiance of the rules of wearability and convention, the exhibition is also evidence of her uncompromising quest for superb craftsmanship and attention to detail.’
The designer has claimed in the past that the towering heels on many of her shoes are to help women make the most of their natural beauty, in order to put ‘women’s beauty on a pedestal’. She is now calling on budding photographers and artists to participate in a new online installation in which the winning entries will appear in an exhibition. ‘100 Days of Active Resistance’ invites the public to submit a slogan, photograph or piece of art that they feel best depicts Westwood’s idea of ‘active resistance’. There is plenty of scope for creativity and the results should be really interesting.
To see the astounding Westwood collection, ranging from dancing shoes to shoes that are to beautiful to be worn, head down to Selfridges this week and immerse yourself in a lesson in British fashion history.
