Yale’s Kroon Hall Features Follansbee TCS Satin™ Roof

University’s New Green Building Turns to Follansbee Materials

Aug. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- A Follansbee TCS Satin™ roof offers a sustainable building element to Kroon Hall, the new home of Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies which was recently honored by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) as one of the  “2010 COTE Top Ten Green Projects.”

The design and construction of the 56,467 square-foot facility was planned in accordance with U.S. Green Building Council standards to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) requirements and was certified LEED Platinum. A Follansbee metal roof contributed to LEED certification due to its high percentage of recycled materials, recyclability and energy savings. The Follansbee roof lends additional sustainability by helping to conserve rainwater for use in toilets and landscape irrigation. Kroon Hall’s rooftop supports a 100-kilowatt array of photovoltaic panels that provides approximately 25% of the building’s electricity.

The Follansbee TCS Satin selected for the roof of Kroon Hall is a stainless steel substrate that is plated with Follansbee’s patented ZT Alloy® and is micro-embossed with a soft flat gray patina finish. The advanced features of this product include a non-reflective, textured finish, greater formability, competitive pricing and superior corrosion resistance compared to most roofing materials.

“TCS Satin was specified for Kroon Hall due to its aesthetics, sustainability and durability,” says Edward Thomas, Follansbee Vice President and General Manager. “The tall, thin shape of the building lent itself very well to our one-inch double lock standing seam curved TCS Satin panels. The south façade of the roof is covered with solar panels, which necessitated special width panels to allow the installation of the solar panel piping. Performance of the roof under the solar panels was critical as repair would be very difficult, but TCS Satin will be able to meet the demands of the harsh New England climate.”

Kroon Hall features two outdoor courtyards, office space for more than fifty faculty members, three classrooms, a 175-seat auditorium, learning center, environmental center and library. The building boasts many other green building attributes, including a geothermal energy system, solar hot water heaters, a heat recovery ventilation system, natural light and ventilation, sustainably harvested wood, low-impact paint, low-E glass and insulation.

The project was completed in May 2009 and received LEED Platinum certification in February 2010. Hopkins Architects, London, served as the project’s design architect, and Centerbrook Architects and Planners, Centerbrook, Conn., as executive architect. Beacon Sales, Brockton, Mass. and Bradco Supply Co., Hartford, Conn. served as project distributors, Turner Construction Co., Inc., Milford, Conn., as construction manager and Ernest Peterson Roofing, Hartford, Conn., as installer.

Yale University’s Walpole Library also features a Follansbee roof with TCS II®, which naturally weathers to a gray patina. Like TCS Satin, TCS II withstands severe corrosive conditions of industrial, coast and salt-water environments and has a lifespan of up to 100 years.
