More than 120 Los Angeles Area Au Pairs Team up in the       First Annual Los Angeles Scavenger Hunt, Saturday, August 21st
SANTA MONICA – Au pairs from the Westside, South Bay, San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley Orange County and San Diego will join forces in Santa Monica Saturday, August 21st at 10:15 AM as part of the First Annual Scavenger Hunt in Los Angeles. Au pairs come from countries worldwide to provide childcare to American families as part of a cultural exchange program sponsored by the U.S. State Department. The Scavenger Hunt provides an excellent opportunity for au pairs to see more of America, while meeting other young women and men from around the world who are sharing in the same experience.

The au pairs will learn about Santa Monica as they scavenge the city on foot in search of items on list detailing information about the city’s history, culture and politics. When they don’t know the answers, they are encouraged to ask locals for help. Winning teams receive great prizes donated by local host families.

“The scavenger hunt is a fun and interesting way for these international men and women to learn more about our great city,” said Tracy Cota, Local Childcare Coordinator for Cultural Care Au Pair. “It’s a memorable experience for them, a great way to discover a great American city and meet some local people, and I think the locals enjoy helping out too.”

The National Association of Childcare Resource and Referral Agencies released a report last week on the high cost of childcare, showing that families are paying up to $18,750 per year - per child - for childcare. Many families select the au pair program as an option because the cost is $340 per week, per family, not per child. In addition, the report shows that the cost of childcare has increased twice as fast as the median income of families with children. Data from the U.S. Department of State, which regulates the au pair program, shows that nearly 22,000 au pairs came to the United States in 2008, up 44% from 2004.

Au pairs come to the U.S. from up to 40 different countries around the world as part of a cultural exchange program regulated by the U.S. State Department. Events like the Scavenger Hunt help au pairs in the area connect to other likeminded young women and men who are taking care of children in the U.S., while helping facilitate the cultural exchange aspect of the program.
