Aug. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- A new poll commissioned by one of the UK’s leading online independent travel agents of more than 1,500 Britons has discovered that 31% of respondents are ‘not worried’ about damaging their skin in the sun on holiday, as long as they come home with a tan.

The study, commissioned by www.sunshine.co.uk, of 1,627 people in the UK aged 18-35 aimed to find out how much of a priority sun protection was for holidaying Brits.

56% of the respondents admitted to having burnt on the first day of a holiday in the past. Of these, 1 in 3 claimed they intended to burn in order to get a ‘better tan’.

Nearly 1 in 10, 9%,  of the total respondents admitted that getting a tan was one of the main reasons they went on holiday in the first place, whilst a further 67% said returning home to face friends and colleagues without a tan was a concern of theirs.

Of the respondents that said they would be concerned about returning home without a tan, 48% were men.

Only 42% said they made sure they applied sun cream regularly on holiday, but of these 58% thought they should probably be wearing higher factor protection. The majority, 59%, of the respondents that claimed they applied sun cream regularly on holiday were men.

88% of the people surveyed claimed to sunbathe ‘every day’ on holiday and 71% wouldn’t consider holidaying abroad in a destination that didn’t have a warm climate.

Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“As a provider of holidays to sunny destinations, we wanted to find out how seriously tourists from the UK were taking sun protection. It’s very apparent from the findings that people aren’t taking the precautions they should be.

“We wanted to highlight how careless some people can be when it comes to sun exposure on holiday. The fact that nearly 1 in 10 said a tan was one of the main reasons they go on holiday in the first place is quite a shock and to hear that a high percentage would be concerned about returning home without a good tan means that despite warnings, people aren’t appreciating the true damage the sun can cause.”
