Costello is no stranger to massive influxes of campaign cash as he took almost three million dollars in “donations”
Costello’s initial reaction was one of the most supportive of all of the Illinois politicians. Other Democrats said that his actions “represent a shameful breach of the public trust and be cause for the governor’s immediate resignation “ (US Rep Phil Hare D-IL), or “our state cannot afford to remain engulfed in this unfolding scandal. Our government’s ability to deal on a daily basis with the fiscal and economic crises we currently face demands leadership and integrity. Our governor cannot provide either” (State Comptroller Dan Hynes-Democrat)
Teri Newman, the Republican candidate for Congress running in Illinois’ 12th district, says “Costello has been consistent on supporting the corrupt political machine in Illinois. He does not stand up for the citizens of southern Illinois if it means standing up against the machine that has created high unemployment, a large budget deficit and a culture of corruption in Illinois.” Mrs. Newman is running against Costello in the November election and is the first serious threat for the career politician in decades. Mrs. Newman is a businesswoman who is adamantly opposed to the health care bill and takes no money from any PAC or special interest groups.
