Follow on Google News | What’s a Gruffalo: Why Didn’t You Know? It’s the Perfect Book for Pre-SchoolersThe Gruffalo is a children’s book by Julia Donaldson about a mouse walking through the woods, keeping himself safe from predators using a combination of cunning and confidence.
By: Jumping Spider Media The Gruffalo tells the story of a mouse walking in the woods who, when faced with a series of predators, manages to avoid being eaten by inventing a monster called a Gruffalo who just happens to love eating the predator in question. When asked by the fox, owl and snake what a Gruffalo is, the mouse answers, “A Gruffalo! Why didn’t you know?” before describing a scary amalgam of features from his imagination. Having escaped all three predators, the mouse is stunned to come across an actual Gruffalo, exactly as he had described, and in a final genius feat of cunning and confidence manages to once again avoid being eaten. The mouse tells the Gruffalo that he is the most feared animal in the forest, an invention that seems to be true when the Gruffalo accompanies him through the forest and sees the fox, owl and snake flee at the sight of the pair. Donaldson was inspired by a Chinese folk story about a fox borrowing the terror of a tiger, introducing the themes of confidence and intelligence to young children through this fun story of the mouse and the Gruffalo.
