Aug. 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Whilst British men are often regarded as the least likely sex to regularly attend to the laundry, new research has revealed the infrequent washing habits of their female counterparts. The latest study from www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, the UK’s leading independent celebrity fashion website, has revealed that just under half, 47%, of women claim to only wash their bra after wearing it 10 times; whilst 25% admitted to regularly wearing tights five times without washing.
The research was commissioned by MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk and a sample of 1,348 women aged 18-25 were polled about their laundering habits, asked questions surrounding the frequency of their washes.
Women who took part in the poll were required to stipulate how often they wash a number of staple wardrobe items; asked the question, “How many times, on average, do you wear these items before washing them?”
Knitwear topped the chart as the least frequently washed item for women; with 65% claiming to only wash theirs after 14 days of wearing it. Bras came a close second, with just under half, 47%, of those polled admitting to usually washing theirs after 10 days of wear. Of the respondents that selected this time bracket, three quarters, 74%, stated that they ‘didn’t think that their bras got that dirty.’
The top five least frequently washed items, as compiled by a majority vote, were as follows;
1.    Knitwear – 14 wears (65%)
2.    Bras – 10 wears (47%)
3.    Hooded Jumpers – 9 wears (36%)
4.    Leggings – 6 wears (28%)
5.    Tights – 5 wears (25%
Only 2% of the women who took part in the study admitted to wearing knickers more than once before washing, whilst 77% also claimed to wash gym clothes after only one wear.
66% of the women who took part in the study admitted that they ‘did not see a problem’ with wearing dirty laundry; whilst over a third, 36%, claimed to launder less frequently due to a lack of time. 54% admitted to cutting back on laundry as a method of money saving.

Andy Barr, marketing director of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented on the findings:
“It appears that young women are just as guilty as men when it comes to dodging the washing pile, although admittedly, are slightly less worrying when it comes to wearing your smalls more than once. I was surprised to see that so many didn’t think that bras needed washing, as despite the belief that they “don’t get dirty”, they do remain in close contact with your skin for the vast majority of the day.
“We conducted the study with an air of light-heartedness and it was interesting to delve into the washing habits of women, finding that despite misconceptions, the differences between the sexes aren’t all that great after all!”
