In 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Government received 557,825 FOIA requests and President Obama issued an executive order calling for increased diligence on the part of government when it comes to making information available to the public. At the same time, data is growing exponentially, making prompt responses an onerous burden. “As government agencies employ digital technology such as databases, e-mail, collaboration software, Twitter, instant and text messaging to execute the agency’s mission, responding to FOIA requests becomes more and more difficult,” said Pat McColloch, Director of Client Services at IE Discovery. “FOIA requests now also include government information maintained for agencies by federal contractors, which exacerbates the problem.”
