1st Philippine International Eco-Show to unveil green industry trends

PRLog - Aug. 17, 2010 - PASAY CITY, Philippines -- The 1st edition of the Philippine International Eco-Show (PINES), a government-led initiative that brings the country's finest environmentally-compliant products and services to the fore, heralds the green revolution as it provides businesses the latest strategies and technologies in going green for the future.

As the first trade and promotional platform in the Philippines with environment preservation as its driving force, PINES features a multi-faceted approach to eco-sustainability with different exhibit zones that cater to green industrial and lifestyle demands, as well as converging local and international eco-advocates.  To be held on 26-28 August 2010 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Philippines, PINES is led by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

With the global eco-market pegged at 330-410 billion EURO by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the environment has in recent years come to greatly influence the public and private spheres - from national policies, corporate strategies, to people's world views and preferences. Consequentially, the 1st PINES Conference aims to identify and explore the key trends and solutions within the country's emerging green market, including the opportunities to be found in the carbon market; green procurement; eco-profit approaches for companies;  sustainable waste management; and alternative healthy food options.

"Through PINES, CITEM provides the platform for eco-stakeholders to converge, discuss issues and trends, and take a stand for the environment by way of pushing businesses to explore sustainable solutions for development," said Thelma Dumpit-Murillo, Project Director of PINES and Deputy Executive Director of CITEM.

The PINES Conference also discusses success stories, best practices, and green innovations paving the way for its theme, "Towards a Greener Earth".

"The old (and existing) paradigm of economics is the economics of extraction and consumption," said Antonio Oposa,Jr., speaker for Day One of the Conference's plenary session on CPR Economics:  The Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation of the Vital Organs of Life.  "I propose a new paradigm -- [which PINES belongs to]...  and I call it restorative economics -- in restoring not only the damaged ecosystems, but more important... the connection between man and Nature."

"If it was the economics of consumption that got us into the problems that we are in now, we must use a different mindset -- that is the mindset of conservation, protection and restoration (CPR)."

Among the world's leading authorities in environmental law, Oposa is best known for the landmark "Oposa Doctrine", regarded worldwide to have established the principle of intergenerational responsibility; or the responsibility of the present generation to ensure the continued availability of necessary life-sources for the future generations.

In 2009, he was the recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award in recognition of his pathbreaking crusade for nature.

Aside from CPR, topics for the Plenary Session include the best and worst practices in urbanization in the Philippines; as well as business opportunities and their application to environmental laws.

Day Two will have diverse Session Tracks on Green Building, Green Business, and Green Community. Speakers come from international associations, e.g., the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Center for Appropriate Technology in Austria, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, Nestle Philippines, and the Green Purchasing Network in Malaysia, among others.

"I hope and expect that the participants will have a view that sustainability aspects of any economic activity should be viewed as something integral and not something taken out of the system as what usual CSR (corporate social responsibility) model dictates," said Joel Palma, Vice President for Programs of WWF Philippines. "It should be ingrained in the day-to-day operations of a company or any economic activity. It’s not one over the other, rather part of the system."

Palma will speak on Sustainable Fishery Resource Management, Conservation, Production and Trade under the Green Community Track.

"[It] is very important for the Philippines to look into this issue seriously, given that protein from the sea is still one of the cheapest sources of protein in the Filipino diet. The issue is food security," he added.

The show targets 100 exhibitors as well as 5,000  trade visitors and buyers for its 2010 run.
