Aug. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- The Australian Migration Digest asks : where does the Australian public stand on immigration?

The Australian Migration Digest has been monitoring the Australian election campaign, during which one of the key issues has been immigration. Australians vote this Saturday 21 August and the outcome of the election may have a major effect on Australia’s migration levels and visa system.

There’s a powerful constituency for high immigration in Australia. Business strongly supports it. So too do a number of mostly conservative media commentators, and some libertarians. And for generations, both sides of politics have backed high immigration as well. Many Australians themselves migrated to Australia or are the descendants of migrants.

This election both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader have spent a lot of time promising to out do each other on lowering immigration but how will this effect Australia’s immigration laws? How much will those promises affect the Australian public’s vote?

Conservative politicians have become adept at exploiting the popular fear of outsiders as an electoral weapon. Such strategies may come at great cost to the cohesiveness of a multicultural, multiracial society like Australia's. Electorally, however, they are very effective.

The Opposition Leader Mr Abbott announced a coalition government would cut the annual immigration intake to 170,000 places, compared to a peak of 300,000 two years ago. The Prime Minister Julia Gillard has stated that she does not support a ‘big Australia’, and that migration levels are naturally reducing anyway.

What they are actually doing is turning their back on high immigration with the aim of securing the support of voters’ perceived disillusionment with long commutes, poor public transport and their inability to afford housing except on the fringes of our cities. Will they succeed? What will it mean for those who want to migrate to Australia? What will it mean for businesses that rely on skilled migration?
