Bad Shopping Cart Behavior Can Be Risky to Kids, Autos and Community

Do abandoned shopping carts monopolizing parking spots get you testy? Shopping cart dings on your auto get you peeved? Alarming 23,000 U.S. children treated in E.R.s for shopping cart injuries! So mojo2Go asks you to 'Have a Heart, Return Your Cart'

Aug. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Chelsea, MA –  mojo2Go Community Civility Projects, Inc , http://mojo2go.us/  a Boston area not-for-profit offers up a rather simplistic, even effortless approach that asks patrons to care a bit more about their fellow shopper – ‘Have a Heart, Return Your Cart’. This civility campaign, as it’s being called by mojo2Go’s cofounder, Judy Parisella; will address Social Impact Building, Shopping Cart Safety and Protection of Persons and Property.  “A lofty goal, but attainable none-the-less”, according to Judy.  She adds, ‘It would be a kick if we could just increase cart returns by at least 25%.”

Mojo2Go CCP asks if you can relate to what Nichols S. of Boston wrote on http://www.yelp.com/boston  about an area Market Basket: ‘Somehow the customers here can't figure out how to return their carts to the cart areas.  The parking lot is always strewn with carts pushed up onto barriers, squeezed between cars, left in the middle of the road, or just rolling away by themselves.’  The latter is a real hazard for according to the Grocers Insurance “Runaway shopping carts have been clocked at speeds exceeding 30 m.p.h. in high winds. As will be appreciated, carts traveling at such high rates of speed can cause serious injury to both pedestrians and motorists. “

Something else found quite surprising is: “According to the American Academy of Pediatrics about 23,000 U.S. children under the age of 14 are treated in emergency rooms for shopping cart-related injuries each year.” Judy shares, “The majority of parking lots associated with consumer activity, include not only cart return corals within the parking lot, but store employees perform shopping cart ‘round-ups’ several times a shift.”  “We’re just asking that the actual consumer do their part by returning their shopping cart, or at the very least secure it as not to become a hazard.”

And oh yes, let’s not forget the foul mood that one of these incidents can put you in.  “We’re stressed and yes even testy as a result of one of these incidents, so why not eliminate it and save the ‘testy’ for the bruised fruit and cracked eggs found at the bottom of your grocery bag?”, Judy says with a wide grin.

The Pepsi Refresh Project has accepted, approved and opened the voting for mojo2Go’s first civility campaign: 'Have a Heart, Return Your Cart'.  Voting Is open until August 31, 2010.  Click on this link to see a video, pictures and details as to how the grant monies will be spent: http://www.refresheverything.com/haveaheartreturnyourcart.  Helps us to foster a community of mutual respect.
