When you hear the words "environment"
Granny Nama understood the importance of recycling 15 years ago. She collected about 1.5 tons of plastic bottles only last year. The awareness at the kibbutz is thanks to her and was built thru many years.
How was this mission born?
"I was always worried about the environment, even thou we called it different names, when it is clean around you, it enables you to breath better. For all the years I worked with children, I always collected the waste that was around, and that is how I educated the kids- to nurture and take care of the environment. Also today, as a pensioner, I continue to emphasize and pay a lot of attention to the subject, which is thanks to the mobility scooter that still enables me to do so."
A full day's work.
Nama has 17 grandchildren and lives on kibbutz Hagoshrim in the north of Israel. Every day she drives around the kibbutz on her mobility scooter and collects bottles and waste. "It is very important to me; the collecting job is not simple and can take 5 hours on some days. It is a whole day's work. Sometimes you can only see my head peeking from a big pile of bottles that I collected. I do feel the change in the younger generation. In the past I was considered weird and crazy for the subject. Today, with the increase of the awareness, they smile at me and call me "the granny with the bottles", and even come and help…."
Is the mobility scooter convenient for you, for this important hobby?
"I am very satisfied with the Afikim mobility scooter, the vehicle and the service I get. I use the mobility scooter a lot, and it serves me well. I believe that when you buy something you should buy the best, so I advise anyone looking for a mobility scooter to only get an Afikim mobility scooter. This is a true recommendation from all my heart. Any problem or malfunction they come fix immediately. They understand the importance of the vehicle for any person that is immobile, so they don't let me wait for long. It defiantly enables me to have a whole, full life and even helped me to improve my hobby, taking care of the environment."
Granny Nama continued to introduce the environment subject and showing by example educated everyone to separate waste is special bins, that she made sure, stand next to each house. "Until the bins were put up, we had only one central bin that was for recycling. The members of the kibbutz had to go to the central mini market to dispose their waste. People are busy, so of course it didn't work and only served the pensioners. From the minute we placed a recycling bin next to each house everything changed. People started to separate and put in the bins near them, and then I come with my mobility scooter, collect from every bin and take it to the central bin.
Granny Nama loves what she does and sees it as an important mission, which gives to community and improves the quality of life. She gets up every morning with satisfaction, gets on her mobility scooter and starts singing. "The members hear me sing and know I'm coming to collect… Like the ice-cream truck." The kibbutz got the title "recycle champions". For her achievements granny Nama got a honor badge from the regional municipality.
