Indianapolis Restaurant serves up “America’s Best”

Indianapolis dining institution, Hollyhock Hill Restaurant has been named to the prestigious list of “America’s Best” by Travel + Leisure Magazine for its signature fried chicken.

Indianapolis dining institution, Hollyhock Hill Restaurant has been named to the prestigious list of “America’s Best” by Travel + Leisure Magazine for its signature fried chicken.  

The annual “America’s Best” awards highlight the results of a survey conducted among Travel + Leisure readers which allows them to share their opinions of favored experiences across the entire hospitality industry. These are recognized alongside Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best” award winners in the magazines’ August issue and in an online exclusive on their website, www.travelandleisure.com.

“We’re honored to receive such high marks from Travel + Leisure, said Jay Snyder, owner of Hollyhock Hill, “not only because they are the leading authority in the hospitality industry, but because ultimately it was their readers and our patrons who brought us this recognition”.  Snyder and his wife Barbara, both of whom have been with the restaurant for over fifty years, proudly adhere to many of the same recipes and preparation techniques utilized since the restaurant first opened in 1928.  

The “America’s Best” article lauds fried chicken in general as “our nation’s dish of choice” and “the workingman’s filet mignon”, referring to Hollyhock Hill’s house specialty as the “best of the best”. The authors specifically credit its freshness, simplicity in preparation and consistent quality for its overall success.  A total of ten restaurants were named to the list, representing cities from New York to Los Angeles and Chicago to Atlanta.  

Nestled in a quiet north side Indianapolis neighborhood, Hollyhock Hill has weathered the test of time, remaining independently owned and operated for over eighty years now.  While famous for its “family-style” service of fried chicken dinners, the menu at Hollyhock Hill also features various seafood and steak entrees that are served alongside heaping bowls of homemade side dishes, akin to grandma’s house on Sunday.

This most recent accolade falls on the heals of the Saveur Magazine article, “Adventures in Good Eating” (July 2008), which features Hollyhock Hill’s “perfect fried chicken” on the magazines’ cover, making it no surprise why Hollyhock Hill remains as an icon on the culinary landscape of Indianapolis and a dining mainstay for generations of couples, families and groups.
