Frequently Asked Questions about Reiki & Reiki Classes

1- What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on of hands” to balance the energy system of the body & can be used for self-healing or the healing and relaxation of another person. Although Reiki is a spiritual practice, it is not a religion and complements whatever spiritual beliefs you hold & can do no harm.

2- Is there any scientific proof that Reiki works?
Ongoing studies are attempting to find scientific explanations as to how Reiki works at the National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine and at the Cleveland Clinic. Even without scientific evidence, most major cancer centers in the country, including Sloan Kettering in New York and M.D. Anderson in Houston, now offer Reiki to their patients.

3- Do you have to be a natural healer to learn Reiki?
No, anyone can learn to give Reiki treatments.

4- What other classes do you teach?
We teach ART, Reiki Master/Teacher Classes, and Crystal Healing Workshops. We will be adding classes in Reiki for Kids & Reiki for Animals.

5- How much do your classes generally cost, and what time commitment is required?
Normally we teach both Reiki I & II together over a weekend. Reiki I is taught on Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm with an hour for lunch. Reiki II is taught on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm with an hour for lunch.

If you take Reiki I & II together the tuition is $350 for both. For those who only care to take Reiki I, and are not yet ready to go on, the tuition for each segment is $200. Either way we provide a manual, handouts and a certificate upon completion.

Our Advanced Reiki Training & Reiki Master Class is taught in 3 days, and the cost is $600.

The Crystal Healing Workshop is a 1 day class from 10 am to 5 pm. The commitment for this workshop is $125. An illustrated color manual written by the instructors covering everything taught in the class is provided.

6- Why do people usually sign up for your classes?
Our Reiki classes are affordable, warm and engaging. Unlike many other energy healing modalities, anyone can learn this art of hands-on-healing in a short period of time, and receive a certificate to practice on themselves and on others.The classes are taught by two experienced Reiki Master/Teachers, Kristin Reed and Barbara Tierney. Our classes are small, giving each student close attention and the central Park Slope location is comfortable and inviting.

We highly recommend using what is learned in class be practiced regularly - the real art comes with a commitment by the student to practice and continue to learn on their own. We offer a free monthly Reiki share to our students so that they have a place to continue to practice and develop what they have learned as an extension of the classes. We are committed to all of our students and offer lifetime support. Our Master Class is for those who are ready to take their practice seriously and would like to go on to teach others.

7- How would you describe your instructors?
We are certified Usui Reiki Master/Teachers, trained by experts in the field of Reiki. First in Usui-Tibetan Reiki by William Lee Rand of the International Center for Reiki Training, and Laurel Shanti Gaia and Michael Baird from the Infinite Light Healing Center in Sedona, AZ. They have also studied “Shinpiden” or Master Level from Japanese Buddhist Monk Hyakuten Inamoto-Sensei, giving them a broad knowledge of how Reiki is taught in the West and how it was originally taught in Japan.

Both instructors have a commitment to volunteer work. Barbara offers free Reiki treatments to veterans suffering from PTSD in the Hudson Valley and coordinates a national network of practitioners doing the same. Kristin works weekly with SPARK (http://www.sparkenergy.org/) SPARK is a registered New York State 501c3 not-for-profit organization that provides free and accessible "energy work" services to the public, non-profits and other institutions.

8- After taking a class, what do students say about their experiences?
We ask our students to evaluate the class before they leave and what comes up over and over is that each student experiences a level of spiritual healing during the class that inspires them to continue with their practice. They usually feel supported and cared for as they launch into a new leg of their journey of self-realization. Here are some of their responses:

I am so thankful to have been a part of your Reiki I class! I was nervous at first, afraid that maybe this just wouldn't work for me. I knew of the power of Reiki from treatments that I received before, but I just wasn't confident in myself. I went home that evening after the class and practiced a treatment on my husband, and we both were surprised by the results. That was all I needed! As a mom of two young children, I have even been able to share Reiki with them. If my children get hurt, they now ask for Reiki and I couldn't be happier!
