By: Firewheel Books and Beans When Jack de Yonge was born in 1934, Fairbanks was a once-thriving mining town in the remote center of Alaska. As Jack’s dad liked to say, no matter what direction you went out of town, you soon arrived in Nowhere. But now the town was dying, the population draining away. Then, World War II broke out, and the Japanese attacked Alaska in 1942. As a young boy, de Yonge watched with curiosity and wonderment as the sleepy little river town sprang back to life with the arrival of thousands of U.S. soldiers, Russian Lend-Lease fighter and bomber pilots, and construction workers. They soon had the red-light district romping and the town’s many bars rocking around the clock. Pulling no punches in his newly published memoir, BOOM TOWN BOY, de Yonge reveals himself to be a fist-fighting, music-loving, reluctant altar boy who discovers his own truths about sex, religion, and racism. His book describes how war arrived in a small town next to nowhere—and nothing was ever the same. Books will be available at Firewheel for purchase during the event.
