Al Ghofran Cemetery is located few Kilometers north of Casablanca, the cemetery is home to thousands of Moroccans and Casablanca natives. Undergoing major expansion to high death tolls due to combination of factors from lack of decent health care to high roadway accident rates.
"During my last visit to al Ghofran to pay tribute to my fathers grave, I was shocked to see that this cemetery was not well maintained, the sanitary conditions were very bad and not within Muslim standards. So, I created an organization here in the US to help clean this cemetery. Our group has no political or religious goals, we simply solicit donations from all Moroccans including the Moroccan Government to address the sanitary issues of this cemetery. Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 by year end." Stated Mr. Bechat during a phone interview on August 3 2010.
The organization is based in Boston USA and has a website (http://alghofran.org) that is accessible to everyone who wishes to learn more about the situation or contribute money toward the project. Currently there is no minimums on the donations, from $1.00 to $1,000.
According to Al ghofran organization, the cemetery will need to undergo major landscaping renovation, installation of trash receptacles, pest control and reconstruction of graves. The group will hire independent contractors to do the work and will closely monitor the progress. One hundred percent of donation will be spent on the clean up and all administrative cost will be paid for by Mr. Bechat the founder of the group.
