SVMC to Offer Hospice Volunteer Training - Make a Difference!

VNA & Hospice of SVHC will begin a nine-week training session on Sept. 9, for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. Hospice volunteers serve many vital roles administratively and with hospice patients and their families.

Aug. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- BENNINGTON — VNA & Hospice of SVHC will begin a nine-week training session on Sept. 9, for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. Participants will meet every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The course is open to anyone in the community who is interested in becoming a hospice volunteer or learning more about hospice. Attending the training does not obligate you to volunteer.

The goal of the training is to help define the role of a hospice volunteer. It covers the history and philosophy of hospice, team building, help with communicating effectively, ways to manage death, dying, and bereavement, and concepts of spirituality.

After the training, hospice volunteers can fill a variety of roles at VNA & Hospice of SVHC. There are opportunities to play an administrative role — helping with mailings, copying, or other office work — or to be involved in patient care. Volunteers perform tasks such as staying with a patient so the family can take a break, providing companionship to hospice patients and their caregivers, assisting hospice patients and their families with meals, and offering bereavement support.

The volunteer is a very important part of the hospice team. For more information, or to register for the training, call Mary Pleasant at (802) 442-5502.
