Market Report, "China Commercial Banking Report Q4 2010", published

Aug. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- With banks having extended over a third of their annual loan quota set by the People's Bank of China (PBC) in Q110, the remainder of the year should see banking sector asset growth fall substantially. We expect total assets to grow by just 10.0% in 2010, down from 33.0% in 2009. A number of smaller banks could get into difficulty as construction loans go bad over the course of 2011 and beyond, and potentially there will be wave of consolidation, whereby larger banks with better balance sheets absorb smaller banks in the face of rising non-performing loan (NPL) losses.    The full-year figures released by the PBC show that the huge lending surge in 2009 had a detrimental impact on Chinese banking sector stability. Due to the outsized rate of client loans (33.0%) compared to the increase in client deposits (27.9%), the loan-to-deposit ratio rose from 66.9% to 69.5% over the year.     In addition, equity as a percentage of total assets continued to fall, from 3.3% to 2.9% (see chart). This is  the lowest level in the region and a long way below the 8.6% average.
