Trendwatch: Spanish Resorts Embrace All-Inclusive Holidays in 2010

After a disappointing 2008/9, Spanish operators turn to all-inclusive packages to drum up business - as statistics for July show a dramatic rise in bookings for the Canary Islands.

Aug. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- With competition from countries outside the Eurozone eating into Spain’s tourism numbers, recent statistics have shown the industry has reacted by moving towards increasing the number of all-inclusive holidays available. 30% of all Spanish holidays sold by British operators in 2010 so far were package deals, with an estimated 15% to 20% of these being all-inclusive – an increase of 10% based on some 2009 figures.

“The Spanish tourist industry is simply reacting to market pressure,” says Luke Nathan of travel consultants Travelsoon.com. “Hoteliers can see that they’re losing business - particularly British business - to cheaper deals based in countries outside the Eurozone, like Turkey and Morocco. And as a reaction to this, travel agencies are seeing their books flooded with cheap holidays to Tenerife (http://www.travelsoon.com/tenerife-holidays.html ), Andulucia and the like.”

Meanwhile, statistics for the month of July show a rise in visitor numbers across the Canary Islands and mainland Spain itself, according to The Mirror newspaper. Gran Canaria has benefited most, with bookings up 479% on July 2009, while sales of Fuerteventura holidays (http://www.travelsoon.com/fuerteventura-holidays.html ) are up 340% - in part due to increased flight capacity to the island.

Lanzarote and Tenerife have both seen smaller boosts – with increases of 132% and 92% respectively, while mainland Spain is represented by a 160% increase in bookings to the Costa Blanca.

“Despite the relative strength of the Euro, Spain and its islands still have a lot going for them at the moment to continue to attract British holidaymakers,” continues Nathan.

“For one, the expatriate communities found throughout the Spanish coast and islands still make for an extremely tempting destination for holidaymakers looking for that right balance of Mediterranean weather and home comforts. Then you’ve the lingering effects of the recession, which combined with tense competition with destinations outside the Euro helps keep prices low.”
