Historic First Baptist Church Capitol Hill Selects a Legacy

The Reverend Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Jr. of Knoxville Tennessee has been selected to serve as the 20th pastor of historic First Baptist Church Capitol, Nashville, Tennessee.
 
Aug. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- The Reverend Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Jr. of Knoxville Tennessee has been selected to serve as the 20th pastor of historic First Baptist Church Capitol, downtown Nashville, Tennessee. His father the late Reverend Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Sr was the 16th pastor of this prominent historic African American Church. Dr. Smith has over 30 years of religious and business leadership experience. He currently serves as Pastor of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN. and will become the Pastor of First Baptist Church Capitol Hill in October 2010. His accomplishments include the establishment of two church-related academies, one of which is pre-school. The Reverend Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Jr. is the Executive Director of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., the Nashville-based publisher of Christian church literature.Dr. Smith received a B.A. in music from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia (1976) and graduated from the Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) also in Atlanta (1983), with a Master of Divinity degree. He received a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio (1993). He served as an adjunct professor at United for Doctor of Ministry students.
Pastor Smith went to Mount Olive in March of 1991, going to Knoxville with a wealth of experience in the ministry. When he went to Mt. Olive the church experienced tremendous growth spiritually, numerically and financially.is very active in numerous religious and professional organizations. He served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention from 2004-2008. From 1993-1997 he served as
President of its the Leadership Education Congress (a position that his father also
once held). In 1996 he began serving on the Board of Directors for the Sunday School
Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. before being asked
in 2007 to serve as the Executive Director. He also is currently serving on various other
Boards of Director across the United States. He was commissioned a chaplain with the
Knoxville Police Department in 1994. He is also one of the contributing devotional
writers to the African American Devotional Bible (Zondervan). He is a member of the
Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Boule’). He was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in April 2003.

A Nashville native, Dr. Smith is the son of Mrs. Alice Smith Risby and the late Reverend
Dr. Kelly Miller Smith, Sr., former pastor of the First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill . He is married to the former Sue Hall and they have three children and three grandchildren.
