This cookbook follows a similar pattern to our previous successful vegan cookbook The Jewish Vegetarian Year Cookbook, introducing Jews to vegan versions to traditional foods for Jewish holidays.  The Vegetarian Shabbat Cookbook combines the  sabbath tradition of festive Sabbath meals with glorious vegan meals.  Vegan food is especially well adapted to the Sabbath ritual of not lighting a fire and not cooking on the Sabbath because most vegetarian foods keep well at room temperature and will keep for the Saturday meal.

This cookbook is a joy to read.  Printed on beautiful matte paper the book is beautiful to hold in one's hands and beautiful to read, with dozens of quotations from famous authors on the significance of the Sabbath  accompanied by  delightful, whimsical illustrations by Holly Kalisher.  The book is bound in a lay flat binding so that it will stay open on a counter for the comfort of the cook and the layout in an 8 X 10 size is easy to manage.  Recipes of polenta tart, vegetable loaves, dips, salads, gingered eggplant, transylvanian goulash, chocolate orange walnut tort, and many others,  float spaciously on the page.   The cover was designed by the Jewish artist, Sara Feldman, whose husband, Jim, contributed two recipes for eggless challah, which we suggest you eat dipped in olive oil spiced with herbs.  Eggless challah are traditional with Syrian Jews who say that that way of making challah goes back t the Temple.

Our vegetarian cookbooks are also popular with non-Jewish vegetarians who want to learn about the Jewish holidays and traditions---and who love to give them to their vegetarian Jewish friends. It's a cookbook that serves friendship as well as culinary desires.
An important introduction by Roberta Kalechofsky- on the origins of the Sabbath --our first social revolution in freedom for humans and animals---sets the background for a revolution in food.
