Aug. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Patty Herrera has chosen to start a candle business selling natural highly scented gourmet candles online. It was not an easy decision to choose among all the different opportunities out there. She had been considering several different options and in fact had started to make candles herself, but being a single mom forced her to reconsider the time it took away from her daughter to be mass producing all of these candles and then for them to sit and take up space in her apartment. It just was not very practical. Sure she enjoyed making them, especially how they filled her home with wonderful fragrances, but it was just too demanding.

Patty decided to give her inventory away to her sister who had also been wanting to start a candle business, but she soon after got married and ran into the same challenges as Patty did. Before Patty Herrera decided to start a candle business she engulfed herself in marketing, learning and reading all kinds of online and network marketing books. She learned how to capitalize on social media, how to create a blog, the importance of copy writing, video marketing and all kinds of other resources that she now shares with those who are also eager to be successful and be financially free.

Here are five very important tips that should be considered before anyone decides to start a candle business or any business.

1) Develop good time management skills.
Time escapes us all and more so if we are not prepared to treat our business like a business and make the most of our time. Learn to use tools and resources to help manage your time such as planners or spreadsheets. Get in the habit of writing to do lists and crossing things off on a daily basis. Differentiate between revenue generating activities and non revenue generating activities and concentrate on actions that directly have an impact on sales and marketing. Whatever works best for you, just do it and do it consistently.

2) Learn that it’s ok to mess up.
The need to know every marketing technique or every detail about your product or to have all your business cards and brochures and website created can cause you to never see a penny of your efforts. If you understand that it’s better to just get going and start spreading the word about your business, rather than wait to have all your ducks in a row, you will begin to build incredible momentum. If you understand that making mistakes is inevitable and that learning from them is so important, you will go far.

3) Find people who have already achieved what you want to accomplish and learn from them.
I have heard it said that our behaviour is a direct response to the expectations of those whom we surround ourselves with. Why is a soldier able to face the enemy in combat and stay up for hours with little food or sleep while on a mission, but when he gets back to the comfort of his home, he’s complacent, lazy and even starts to put on weight? Because that soldier is no longer surrounded by other soldiers and sergeants who expect him to perform his duty. We need to surround ourselves with people who will hold you accountable as well as encourage you to accomplish what you set out to do. Realize that many of those around you will not want to buy your product or hear about your new entrepreneurial adventure. There are are people out there however, who do care and who are experiencing the life that you only dream of and without their support, it will most likely not happen for you. People who have achieved wealth and financial freedom want to give back and share what they have learned. It is their way of contributing to the society that has helped them get where they are.

4) Get in the habit of writing about anything and everything. If you do not feel comfortable writing, you will not be successful marketing your business online.
Unless you have enough money to outsource your writing to someone else. Even if you decided to record videos for all your marketing, you still have to give your videos titles and descriptions that capture people’s attention. You cannot get away from writing in marketing a business online. If you do not like to write, but you are committed to making your business profitable, start writing at least one article a week. Write about something you are passionate about and don’t worry so much about spelling and grammar.

5) Become a balanced person. Learn how to balance yourself spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially.
Make sure you spend time every day working on improving the quality of your life in all these aspects. That doesn’t mean that you can’t start a candle business until you lose 40 pounds or until you save 30% of each paycheck or until you read through the Bible in a year. It simply means that you should invest in resources that will help you and encourage you to become a leader, someone that others will aspire to be like. Just like you have role models you want to be like, someone who is where you want to be, someday you will be there too and others will want to be like you so become that person others will look up to and want to be like.

These are all important things that you should at least be conscious of as you start a candle business.
