Leading Causes Visual Impairment and Blindness in America According to Edison Eye Surgeon

The leading causes of blindness in America are primarily age-related eye diseases, many of which are correctable in their early stages.

Adult Americans could prevent or delay many vision problems with regular screenings and proper eye care, according to ophthalmologist Hitesh K. Patel, M.D. of Patel Eye Associates in Edison.

"As we age, we should be aware of the most common eye diseases which can rob our vision. If we understand some of the symptoms, some of which seem of only minor importance on their own, we are more likely to take them seriously and act on them," commented Patel.

Studies show that most US citizens are confused and under informed regarding age-related eye conditions. These misunderstandings lead many to delay eye exams and treatments, believing most problems can be corrected later, when in fact most are correctable only in the early stages.

Some of the age related disorders of which adult Americans should become aware include:

•   Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) — An eye disease causing central vision loss.
•   Cataracts — A cloudy film which covers the lens of the eye.
•   Diabetic retinopathy — occurs in people with diabetes which causes damage to the retina and leads to blindness.
•   Dry eye — A condition where the eye does not produce enough tears to lubricate the eye, resulting in visual disturbances
•   Glaucoma — A group of eye diseases causing damage to the optic nerve and resulting in peripheral vision loss.
•   Retinal detachment —When the retinal tears or separates from the underlying tissue. Considered a vision emergency.

"One of the most concerning things people commonly believe is that glaucoma is preventable or continues to be treatable indefinitely. It is, in fact, only treatable in the early stages. Others are not aware of the incredible advances in ophthalmology and do not know how successfully many things can be treated today," Patel explained.
