Aug. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- The number of people making immigration to Australia has surged in 2010. This number is highlighted by a previously anticipated record amount of asylum seekers hoping to gain citizenship in Australia before the year is over. The total amount of arrivals is expected to surpass 7,000 and arrive in on over 150 boats.

These numbers will be scrutinized even further as the date of elections for Australia’s next Prime Minister draws near. Immigration to Australia continues to be one of the hottest topics being debated in the race for the office. Incumbent Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her opponent, Tony Abbott, continued to throw opinions back and forth as the issue of asylum seekers roars ahead towards critical status.

“To start with we will bring back temporary protection visas. It's got to be an option available to the Australian government,” stated Abbott, referring to the country’s attempts to turn the incoming boats around.

Gillard is already on record as saying that she is against a “big Australia” and wants numbers in immigration to Australia to correspond directly to the country’s available resources.

The issue has grown even urgent as the record of asylum seekers being granted permanent visas has escalated under the current administration. Statistics show that almost 1,300 people have already been granted permanent visas this year as opposed to 2009 when just over 1,100 were approved.

Prime Minister Gillard’s spokespeople have steadfastly maintained that they are working on curbing immigration to Australia and claim that the new policies will help. Preventing the boats from even leaving their departure ports as opposed to turning them away at the local shorelines, should do the job.

The bottom line is that despite the verbal back and forth, immigration to Australia for asylum seekers keeps rising and there seems to be no end in sight. How will this play out? Voters want to know and, with elections less than five weeks away, whoever comes up with the answer to that question may very well grab the upper hand when the people go to the polls.
