Vesch rolls out Nordic ID Morphics in their distribution centers

Russian retail chain Vesch! is a multi-brand trade house of affordable clothing for men, women and children, founded in 1999. Currently there are more than 60 stores in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Voronezh, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Yaroslavl, Ufa, Tambov, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Izhevsk and other cities of Russia. Shopping space is more than 13 thousand square m, the number of employees is arround 1000 people. In 2008 number of stores increased to 21, 5 new retail outlets were opened in 2009. Starting from May 2005 the Swedish Ikea (STK "MEGA") is a partner in the company development, there are Vesch! stores in the each of MEGA malls. Today Vesch! is one of the fastest growing companies on the apparel market in Russia.

The retail chain development strategy is based not only upon increasing the number of stores, important factors of the company growth and efficiency are also implementation of modern IT technologies, automation of the management and processes, diversification, customer service improvement, loyalty programs, introduction of additional customer services.

Customer need

As a big retail network Vesch! has a distribution center (DC), where the goods are received from suppliers and afterwards shipped to the stores in smaller parties. The work of DC is based on cross-docking technology:  incoming goods are immediately redirected to the retail chain outlets, without being kept in the storage area.

To optimize the DC’ functioning and to increase its efficiency it was decided to move to low-cost and quick setup system and to up-date old equipment. The main goal of the modernization was to reduce significantly documents and goods processing time by transferring it into on-line regime.

The solution: choice and implementation

The main criteria for the solution choice were following factors: cost-efficiency, quick setup and simple integration, device capabilities of flawless work with the terminal client. The PILOT’s  solution met all the customer requirements.

The PILOT experts introduced to the customer Nordic ID Morphic – a new product of Nordic ID, leading auto ID mobile terminal supplier in Europe. Despite its compact size and light weight, Morphic is equipped with all modern communication technologies such as Wi-Fi and GPRS, powerful processor and large amount of operational non-volatile memory. It’s extremely ergonomic design makes this handheld to fit comfortably in one’s hand. Shaped like a mobile phone it is easy to use and its operating logic is very straightforward. During the implementation process the PILOT’s experts faced some difficulties in adaptation of the solution to the DC processes. The perfect way out was the terminal client adjustment within the Wi-Fi environment. Nordic ID Morphic’ remote server connection option allows start using this handheld without preliminary catalogue of goods downloading on it, which totally eliminates the long period of getting a terminal ready for work.

The warehouse workers can start or continue using Nordic ID Morphic at any moment, as it is always online and ready for reading.

Results

The processing of documents and goods decreased by 20% due to the new equipment introduction and exchange processes and data verification excluding. Now all the data is delivered directly to the system, the whole system operates in on-line regime.

As a result of unloading warehouse operators at the time of acceptance of goods, now there is an opportunity to reallocate freed staff to perform other warehouse operations. Alexey Neumyvakin, IT Director of the retail chain and project supervisor from the customer side, said: “Our Distribution Center basically is a warehouse with simple operations, and Nordic ID Morphic handheld turned out to be a perfect match for that purpose. Now there is no need in buying expensive equipment – building up the right business processes is more important for us today. Bar-coding technology accelerates the implementation of warehouse operations and allows saving costs on scanners.
