Aug. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- If you’re looking for a great day out for all the family this summer holiday, head for Lower Drayton Farm in Penkridge. Set amid rolling Staffordshire countryside, this working farm has once again launched a ‘Maize Maze’ designed to delight visitors of all ages.
Set to open to the public at 11am on Thursday, 5th August this year’s maze has a host of new features, including a ‘hay mountain’ to scale and a ‘molehill’ in the centre, as manager Val explains:

“We had a great response to the Maize Maze last year – it’s a fantastic way to spend a day out in the fresh air with the family. This year we’ve made the maze even bigger and better; children will love climbing the hay mountain and the molehill is not only great fun to tunnel through, but it provides a vantage point from which you can see the whole maze. We’re launching a little later than planned but Maize is a natural, growing crop and the dry spell we’ve had recently means that it’s taken longer than usual to reach full height – but the wait has really been worth it!”

When you’ve conquered the maze there’s plenty still to do at Lower Drayton Farm. You can pick your own sunflower to take home with you and, in a few weeks’ time when the crop has matured, visitors will be invited to pick their own corn on the cob to take home for tea.

There’s a free Woodland Trail Quiz where you can identify the species of tree that have been planted in this nature-rich mixed woodland while spotting rare butterflies, bugs and birds. Younger children, meanwhile, will love having the opportunity to meet friendly rabbits and ducklings – not to mention the chance to feed the resident emus! A tour of the farm, from the comfort of a purpose-built trailer, provides a great way to round off your day at the farm.

If all this activity means you’ve worked up an appetite, refreshments including tea, coffee and homemade cakes are available on site and there’s a pretty area near the woodland trail that’s perfect for picnics.

The Maize Maze will be open from 11am – 6pm, Thursday – Sunday from Thursday 5th August through to late September. Prices to take on the maize are: Adults £4.75; Children & OAPs £3.75; Family tickets (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children) £16.00; party bookings by arrangement – call Val on 07817 691352.
