By: Lisandra Carballosa Fifty years ago, famed architect Morris Lapidus, saw his vision of a modernized Lincoln Road come to life; rich with the sweeping curves of his signature MiMo architectural design and free from Miami traffic in favor of a sophisticated pedestrian walkway. His signature style, once elusive to critics, is now appreciated and admired by the world, a testament that Lapidus was an architect who was truly ahead of his time. Morris Lapidus’, who is also the architect of the acclaimed Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Hotels, brought an edge to Miami Beach with his idiosyncratic designs that established it as a destination where celebrities’ In a year that marks the 50th Anniversary of Morris Lapidus’ modern pedestrian redesign, Lincoln Road is again realizing a vision of luxury transformation. Today, Lapidus designs are complemented by a wealth of new buildings, entertainment venues, upscale boutiques, health spas, and restaurants that have allowed Lincoln Road to prosper in the Miami Beach community. Modern architect stars such as Frank Gehry, Swiss architects Jacques and Pierre de Meuron, among others, will join the ranks of the legendary Morris Lapidus with their impending architectural designs for Lincoln Road. There is no place like it in the world. Certainly Worth Avenue in Palm Beach and Las Ramblas in Barcelona are famous; however, the lack of vehicular traffic allows for outdoor cafes, luxury retail, and arts and entertainment venues like no where else. The promenade’s captivating 1111 Building and its iconic new parking garage will become another mainstay for visitors of Lincoln Road, with its open-air design, beautiful black and white geometric stone paved plaza, and native Floridian landscaping, a tribute to the flora that once dominated Southern Florida in the early 20th century. A few blocks east, in January 2011, Frank Gehry’s dynamically designed New World Symphony performance hall will fill the air with the hum of the famous orchestra, an attraction that will enchant local Miami residents and tourists from around the world and position Lincoln Road as a cultural destination with few peers. New luxury stores and other developments continue to be built, from its east end at Washington Avenue to the recent block-long expansion west to Alton Road, which includes new stores such as 4-3, MAC, Journelle, Osklen and Coltori, Swarovski, All Saints, Herve Leger, and many others. The renovation and construction of the blocks to the east between Washington and Collins Avenues up until the Beach and the elegant Ritz Carlton Resort, will fuse the East and West sides of Lincoln Road, allowing visitors to take pleasure in all that Lincoln Road has to offer. In addition to the expansion projects, the Lincoln Road Marketing Association will be hosting its annual events such as Halloween and Christmas, as well as new signature events for the community which will entice local residents and tourists to spend the day strolling, eating, shopping, and people watching along Lincoln Road.
