Elgin Country Club, host of the 79th Annual CWDGA Championship Tournament in July

The Chicago Women’s District Golf Association (“CWDGA”), an organization dedicated to the advancement of women’s golf at its member clubs, held its 2010 Championship Tournament at the Elgin Country Club on July 27, 28 and 29.

July 31, 2010 - PRLog -- The CWDGA Championship Tournament, the 79th in the organization’s history, was limited to a field of 80 amateur entrants with handicaps of 26 or lower, all from CWDGA clubs.  The format for the event was Match Play in flights by handicap.  The Championship flight consisted of 16 entrants; all other flights had eight entrants.  All ladies played at scratch within each flight, with the entire field having played the first and second days.  The final results are as follows.

Sixth flight winner: Mary Jo Sheehy, Elgin Country Club.  Fifth flight winner: Susan Apel, Ruth Lake Country Club.  Fourth flight winner: Jo Capitani, Elgin Country Club.  Third flight winner: Courtney Kellogg, Elgin Country Club.  Second flight winner: Ginny Becker, McHenry Country Club.  First flight winner: Debbie Radakovich, Joliet Country Club.  Championship flight Consolation Runner-up: Sue O’Connor, Conway Farms Golf Club; Consolation winner: Sue Hennessy, Midlothian Country Club; Championship Runner-up: Laura Carson, Onwentsia Golf Club; Championship Winner: Tanya Olson, Naperville Country Club.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the CWDGA was formed in 1930 under the guidance of the Women’s Western Golf Association.  The primary purpose of the CWDGA is to promote and advance women’s golf and their interests at member clubs.  Member clubs are located in and around the Chicagoland area.  The CWDGA provides its members competitive opportunities, in the form of tournaments held throughout the golf season.  The Championship is the only three-day event the CWDGA hosts, although several one-day tournaments are held throughout the year.  Members and member clubs enjoy numerous benefits on behalf of the CWDGA.

This was the first year the Elgin Country Club has hosted the Championship Tournament.  Established in 1901, the Elgin Country Club offered the ladies a challenging yet competitive course during the three-day tournament.  Elgin Country Club has tree-lined fairways and dramatic undulation, and is unlike many courses found in the Midwest.  The club is located in Elgin, west of the Fox River in Kane County.  The CWDGA is proud to have added “Elgin Country Club to the list of distinguished club that have hosted the Championship Tournament”.

Elgin Country Club, founded in 1901, is the fourth oldest private golf facility in Illinois.  Elgin Country Club is member-owned, and offers a dynamic and scenic 18-hole golf course, practice range, tennis courts, pool and multiple dining venues.  The Club has been the site of numerous tournaments and many famous people have graced the course.  Chuck Emmert, Club Member and Elgin CC’s amateur historian, has written a volume full of Elgin CC history.
