Today, one of three American kids and teens are overweight or obese, nearly tripling the rate since 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren't seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels.

The American Heart Association is focusing attention on the importance of positive cardiovascular health practices beginning in childhood. “Successfully preventing or treating childhood obesity may help reduce the risk of heart disease and other complications.  The American Heart Association encourages kids and their parents to eat healthy and be physically active to reach a healthier lifestyle,” said Stephen R. Daniels, MD, PhD Member and Past Chair of The American Heart Association's Council for Cardiovascular Disease in the Young.

When asked about the role of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN),  panelist Amy Garcia, Executive Director of NASN replied, "School nurses are involved in many ways because our mission is to keep kids healthy, in school and ready to learn. We all should be giving some thought to what it is that we can do to reverse the tide of childhood obesity.”

Another panelist on the webcast was Lisa L. Sharma is the Senior Associate at the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education and Families. She stated, “Local governments want to create safe and nourishing environments where children can grow up reaching their potential and become productive members of society. Good health is a major concern.”

“Solving Childhood Obesity” is part of a series of health and wellness programs jointly produced by the National League of Cities internet-based TV channel, Give the World Your Heart TV and TV Worldwide.

"We were pleased to see Internet TV Channels we work with collaborate to solve some of the nation's most complex challenges, using interactive social media principles," commented Dave Gardy, Chairman and CEO of TV Worldwide. "It is always a pleasure to work with people that have an interest in making the world a better place, like the content contributors to 'Give The World Your Heart' TV and the National League of Cities TV community."

"The time is now, for everyone to come together to solve the childhood obesity issue once and for all, by engaging in positive activities as a way to maintain the trust of kids, adults and to lower the cost of healthcare," remarked Dr. Laurence Brenner, a member of the Give The World Your Heart's Health Advisory Board. "When we work together giving our heart-felt intentions for a better outcome, then this level of trust may be just enough to finally see remarkable results."
