Fast Market Research recommends "Oman Commercial Banking Report Q3 2010" from Business Monitor International, now available

July 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Dubai World News Lightens The  Mood  This year will be a better for Oman's  small banking sector than 2009, with  lending regaining pace and the real  economy picking up again.  Developments in the oil sector suggest  there are upside risks to our long-term  deposit growth forecasts.  Full-year 2009 data show a sluggish  performance by Omani banks in 2009,  despite the resilient overall economic  picture. Assets grew by just 2.9% year-on-year (against consumer price inflation of 0.9% over the same period). This was down sharply from a  peak of 43% growth in 2007 and 33% in 2008. In this category, consumer loans actually outperformed,  growing by 6.6% y-o-y, which puts Omani banks ahead of some of their regional counterparts. The  equivalent loan growth figure in Bahrain was -0.8%, while there was 2.4% growth in the UAE, as part of  overall asset growth of -5.9% and 4.3% respectively.  However, bond portfolio assets achieved by far the greatest rise in the Omani banking sector. Even  stripping out the base effects of December 2008, for which data shows a sudden dip that may be a error  by the central bank, bond assets rose by 46% y-o-y in 2009, illustrating the preference for 'safe haven'  assets. The real decline is in 'other assets', which typically refers to interbank loans. This was down by  28% y-o-y, suggesting a slowdown in activity generally as banks waited out the economic storm.  The banks' caution was understandable. Deposits were also falling sharply and oil prices and corporate  profits averaged a lot lower in 2009. The overall number of client deposits grew by just 6.0% y-o-y,  compared to 32.2% the previous year. The number of non-performing loans also increased. BankMuscat  achieved a net profit of OMR73.7mn in 2009, down from OMR93.7mn in 2008, with provisioning for  bad debt reaching OMR98.2mn during the year, up from OMR24.6mn in 2008. The second biggest  lender, National Bank of Oman, posted a drop in net profit to OMR26.1mn. The  bank attributed the result to 'an impairment loss against the investment portfolio of OMR4.1mn,  provisions against our lending portfolio of OMR15.5mn and provisions of OMR8.0mn against specific  interbank exposures as previously advised to the market'.
