RELEASE IMMEDIATELY

Pira Packaging Summit – final programme announced, featuring big names.

At the current rate of change it is hard to imagine what our lives as consumers will be like in 2020, much less the retail environment and the packaging we buy. In order to position businesses for sustainable profitable growth, there must be an understanding of how a wide range of drivers will co-relate to create the packaging market of the future. Pira has created a brand new event to address these issues; the Pira Packaging Summit 2010 takes place on 5 & 6 October at the Copthorne Tara Hotel, London, UK.

The unique format of this new event is designed for senior decision-makers and strategists to provide a platform for assessing current drivers and future scenarios for the packaging industry. It draws together expert, big-picture global economic and demographic analysis with insight from senior industry leaders and Pira’s latest market statistics to determine an accurate forecasting for strategic planning to roadmap the future socioeconomic environment.

The two-day conference is divided into four sessions; What global economic and consumer trends really mean for packaging, Sustainability 2.0, Future retail scenarios for FMCG and The Great Packaging Debate. The programme offers in-depth insight into challenges for the packaging sector and addresses issues not just of the present day, but of the forthcoming years as consumer behaviour and retail environments develop dynamically.

On day one special guest keynote speaker Oliver Sparrow, founder of The Challenge Network and author of “Beyond Crisis” will be examining the challenge of renewal in the post recession landscape as well as being co-chair for day one. The brand keynote speaker for day one is Puma’s Mark Coetzee who will present “experiences from inside and outside the box”. The introduction of Puma’s innovative packaging and distribution system hopes to reduce the paper used for shoeboxes by 65% and carbon emissions by 10,000 tons per year - the remaining packaging materials used will be fully sustainable by 2015.

On day two Professor Michael Braungart discusses the Cradle to Cradle theory for packaging - transforming the concept into reality. Professor Braungart, the founder of EPEA and co-founder of MBDC pioneered a system of product innovation known as Cradle to Cradle. Braungart works with industrial producers on issues of materials assessment, life cycle design and designing for disassembly. Pepsico’s Asit Modha and Dr Ron Cowell from HJ Heinz also feature on day two’s agenda as does Pav Anad of McKinsey and Company and Graham Hales, MD of Interbrand with Maureen Hinton, Verdict Research.

The conference also features senior industry figures such as Julian Walker-Palin of Asda and Oliver Campbell, Worldwide Senior Manager of Packaging, Dell Inc on day one as well as Peter Skelton from WRAP and Dr Ian Bucklow, Crown Holdings.

The comprehensive programme will be complimented by a cocktail reception on the evening of day one where all delegates and speakers are invited to socialise and reflect on the day’s proceedings. The complete agenda as well as more information about this conference can be found at www.pirapacksummit.com.
