Loyola University Turns Down Karl Rove for Obama Crony

July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Loyola University of Chicago has refused to host Karl Rove, claiming that doing so would affect their tax-exempt status. Yet, the University has also decided to allow Eboo Patel, Obama's appointee to the White House Interfaith Council, to speak at the end of August. Aside from the fact that Karl Rove is a well-known and respected political analysis and Eboo Patel is a total unknown who obsesses over identity politics and sees Christian Fundamentalists and Islamic terrorists as the same sort of people, Loyola has invited politically charged speakers in the past. In 2004, Loyola hosted Howard Dean and Ralph Nader during their runs for the White House. Nader's event was even billed as an official campaign event. This reveals a very political bias in the speakers that Loyola chooses to allow on campus. While hiding behind the tax code is merely an excuse for the University, this serves as yet another reason for serious tax reform and simplification of the tax code. Loyola shrewdly calculated that given the complexity of the tax code, disproving their claims based on the tax code would impose costs serious enough for the college students attempting to bring Rove onto campus to abandon their effort. The university is using the tax code to suppress political speech. Loyola's refusal to even entertain opinions different from the official line of the university administration sets a dangerous precedent for other college campuses.
