A child’s reading and writing skills usually determine how well they do in school
as well as how they connect with others both in and outside of the classroom. Reading, writing and spelling determine the degree or depth that a child can master academic subjects, not to mention how effectively they can listen, gain new knowledge and express themselves. “Language skills are the keys to a child’s development,”
points out ‘The Sarasota Tutor’ Medora Sheehan, “because they affect how quickly and deeply a child can absorb and talk about their new experiences, discoveries and interests.”
As classrooms face the economic challenges of accommodating kids with less support, a child can easily miss the individual attention they need and fall behind. If the learning approach or material doesn’t grab their attention, both gifted children as well as those with learning difficulties can easily become bored or distracted and miss the lesson at hand. “Children learn faster and more completely in the summertime because it is a gentler, less stressful environment,”
says Sheehan. “Each session in the summer can have the impact of many classes in the school year because it can teach the student that they can learn on their own independent terms without the burden of a curriculum which often has to be one-lesson-fits-
all. Summer is the most opportune time for any child to either catch up, get ahead and get a critical jump start on the new school year.”
Besides offering a more relaxed atmosphere to learn, Sheehan has found that summertime allows her much more flexibility to build on the child’s developmental needs, overall strengths and importantly, to custom tailor each lesson to their individual interests. “My job goes beyond helping a child to catch up,” stresses Sheehan, “by teaching them that learning is an adventure that can be a lot of fun and so rewarding. My major goal is nurture their aspiration to learn on their own so they don’t need me to reach their full potential.”
The Sarasota Tutor, also known as the Turtle Rock Tutor, is offering a special back-to-school program in all academic subjects for children in grades K to 6, and selected areas for those in grades 7 to 9. With the purchase of the first class, the second class is free. Better yet, the first class is preceded by a complimentary evaluation session to allow the parent, student and Ms. Sheehan the opportunity to discuss personal needs, specific goals and to confirm the program offers the ideal fit in terms of time, budget and overall returns for the child.
Ms. Sheehan, who has a M.S. from Johns Hopkins University has 25 years of experience and success teaching all academic subjects in both the public and private schools of Connecticut, Maryland and North Carolina, as well as providing personal tutoring. To learn more about her special summer program and offer, contact her at either 941-929-1942 or at Sarasota.Tutor@
