Latest research by the UK’s leading discount voucher codes website has revealed that 32% of people would ‘live as they were’ if they won a substantial amount of money on the lottery, whilst 11% would set up a business and 46% would donate some of their winnings to charity.
The poll by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk of 1,537 men and women across the UK aimed to discover what people would spend their money on if they suddenly found themselves with a substantial amount of £5million or more.
Of the respondents that said they would ‘live as they were’ if they won £5million or more, 62% said it was because they would want to ‘stay grounded’. MyVoucherCodes.co.uk also asked these respondents to further explain what they believed ‘living as they were’ would entail. 54% said it would mean keeping their existing job, whilst 39% agreed they would remain in their home.
More than half, 57%, said they would ‘drastically change’ their lifestyle if they won £5million or more on the lottery and http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk asked these respondents to name their spending priorities if they won, based on the question ‘which of the following would you spend your winnings on first?’
The results were as follows;
1. Help family 22%
2. Pay off debts 17%
3. Holiday 13%
4. House 12%
5. Car 10%
6. Charity 9%
7. Start a business 7%
8. Help friends 5%
9. Private healthcare 3%
10. Invest 2%
Respondents were also asked whether they would prefer their winnings in one lump sum or in smaller instalments throughout their life. 71% claimed they would have the money all at once, with 56% of these saying it would be so they could ‘live off the interest’.
3% of the respondents said they wouldn’t like to win the lottery.
Farhad Farhadi, personal finance expert at http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said;
“Everyone dreams of winning the lottery and I think many assume that people immediately trade in their old lifestyle for a more affluent one if they become millionaires. Therefore, it’s interesting to see that nearly a third would actually ‘live as they were’ if they won big on the lottery.
“As for the spending priorities of those that would drastically change their lifestyle, it was quite endearing to see that helping out family was a key concern for most.
Unfortunately, money can change people and not always in a good way, which is perhaps why quite a high number are attracted to the idea of keeping their existing lifestyle.”
He concluded;
“With only a 1 in 14 million chance of winning the UK National Lottery, not too many people will be faced with the issue of what they should spend their money on. However, sites like ours can help people to live a life of luxury at a lower price, so you don’t have to be a millionaire to enjoy the finer things in life.”
