Connecticut Eye Center Offers Free Vision Clinics for Children Without Insurance

West Hartford & Avon, Connecticut - Physicians from the Connecticut Eye Center are offering free vision checks to children without insurance to properly screen and diagnose school-aged children for potential vision problems.

PRLog - Jul. 26, 2010 - WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Simple 20/20 school tests detect only 5% of vision problems

Early detection of vision problems significantly benefits a child’s learning ability throughout their school years. “Preschool and school vision screenings are designed to detect only the most obvious problems,” said Dr. Patrick F. Albergo, MD from the Connecticut Eye Center. “When vision problems are detected early, appropriate therapy can be implemented immediately and learning and self esteem problems due to poor vision completely avoided.”

An estimated 10-15% of children in the U.S. suffer from undetected vision impairments, according to the American Foundation for Vision Awareness. Multiple studies reveal undiagnosed vision problems significantly impact learning abilities throughout a child’s education. Since 80% of all learning during the first 12 years of life is obtained through vision, correctly screening and identifying vision problems is critical.

60% of problem learners have undiagnosed vision problems

Quite often children with vision related learning problems are misidentified as having social or behavioral problems, or even learning disabilities. A child with vision problems may squint, have frequent headaches, act out, or perhaps not complain at all.

“Vision has an immense impact on how fast and how much a kid learns. It’s our hope that bad vision doesn’t hold them back from reaching their potential,” said Dr. Duane F. Austin, a Board Certified Eye Physician and Surgeon volunteering his time to examine children at the free vision clinics. “School screening tests only identify the most basic of vision disabilities, and we are happy and inspired to offer a more comprehensive exam to the children in our community.”
