In June NCODP was awarded first prize at the Breakthrough UK awards in recognition of their excellence in the recruitment and employment of disabled employees. Now Eileen Wakefield, training coordinator for NCODP, has won the Learning in the Workplace Champion Award. The prize was awarded in recognition of Eileen’s championing of learning within NCODP as well as promoting the benefits of learning to staff and volunteers. The prize was part of Norwich City College VQ Day Employer Awards 2010, which seeks to celebrate not only the achievements of the college’s students, but also the employers who make it possible. NCODP have always worked from an ethos’s of developing its staff and volunteers, providing training for its volunteers and employed members of staff, which ensures that volunteers are able to build upon their previous work experience to develop themselves. Many volunteers have moved into paid employment with the organisation and find the training invaluable when it comes to looking for paid employment. Eileen herself started as a volunteer with NCODP which allowed her to build up her self esteem as well as broadening her skills before moving into paid employment with the organisation. She now develops courses to train the organisation’ Eileen said after winning the award “The award has given me such a boost. I hope it will boost NCODP too. The organisation has supported me in my return to paid work as it has done for lots of people who started as volunteers. All we needed was a chance to rediscover our skills and the opportunity to make a contribution in the workplace.” With the ever growing need for its advice and advocacy services, the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People is currently seeking people to join its ranks of volunteers. With so much to offer to volunteers, giving even just a few hours to NCODP can enable individuals to build their resume as well as work experience and finding new skills. The Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People hopes these two recent awards will highlight to anyone considering volunteering the wonderful opportunities that exist and how they can help not only themselves but also their local and wider community. They organise and take part in campaigns and run services that promote social equality and dignity for all disabled people. The NCODP regards having an impairment as a normal part of being human. Disability results from people with impairments being excluded by physical and social barriers and negative attitudes. Their main task is to challenge the many forms of discrimination created by these barriers and attitudes. The NCODP believes that disabled people must take the leading role in decisions that affect their lives both locally and as part of the national and international disability movements in which the NCODP plays an active part. There must be “Nothing about us without us.” End
