The name “Hydra” comes from the word “hydro” which means “water” in the Greek language. The island of Hydra in the Argosaronic gulf close to the Eastern coast of the Peloponnese, is only one hour away from Athens, otherwise measured as 35 miles by Hydrofoil from the port of Piraeus in Athens. The island covers an area of 48 kilometers and has 3000 inhabitants and 370 churches, where all transportation is conducted for people and goods on the backs of donkeys and mules. It is one of the only places in the world where no car, motorcycles or even bicycles are allowed by law, making it serene and relaxing!
Hydra played a vital role in the history of Greece with the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire which occupied Greece since 1453. The island of Hydra contributed in a very important way with its ships constituting two thirds of the total Greek fleet, together with trained crews and the wealth of the Hydra ship owners.
