Jan. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- This special Greek island of Hydra with an ancient history has now also become the modern attraction for traditional weddings in Greece.  To give you a peak of the superb surroundings this Design a Day  bridal couple experienced,  we will tell you a little about this island  to whet your appetite before you may also decide  to “tie the knot” in Hydra.

The name “Hydra” comes from the word “hydro” which means “water” in the Greek language. The island of Hydra in the Argosaronic gulf close to the Eastern coast of the Peloponnese, is only one hour away or 35 miles by Hydrofoil from the port of Piraeus. The island covers an area of 48 kilometers and has 3000 inhabitants and 370 churches, where all transportation is conducted for people and goods on the backs of donkeys and mules. It is one of the only places in the world where no car, motorcycles or even bicycles are allowed by law,  making it serene and relaxing!

Hydra played a vital role in the history of Greece with the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire which occupied Greece since 1453. The island of Hydra contributed in a very important way with its ships constituting two thirds of the total Greek fleet, together with trained crews and the wealth of the Hydra ship owners.

The unique light and the crystal clear blue water in Hydra present the ideal combination of nature and architecture, attracting cinema directors, photographers, artists, movie stars, and members of the jet set.  Brigitte Bardot, Bob Jacouri, Audrey Hepburn, Anthony Quinn, Ego von Furstenberg, Joan Collins, Aris Onassis, Maria Callas, Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, fashion designer Valentino,  all enjoy their regular  visits to Hydra drawing from it the natural charm it has to offer. Leonard Cohen’s house in Hydra was the place he chose to live permanently, for many years.

Famous movies  such as  “The boy on the dolphin” which cast Sophia Loren and Alan Ladd;  “Phaedra” by Michael Cacoyiannis which starred Anthony Perkins, Ralf Val and Melina Mercuri,  have all been shot in Hydra. Picturesque Mediterranean houses, lush groves of olive trees, lemon trees, fuchsia Bougainvillea and endless blue sea makes this Greek  island is a true gem.

It is in this light that Design a Day extend to you an invitation to celebrate your union together in this unique traditional Greek island setting with its rich history and modern attraction!
