July 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Robert Braff, original founder and Grandmaster of San-Ryu-Do style, notes the four earliest main styles of karate: Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, Uechi-Ryu, and Shorei Ryu. Karate is a striking art, utilizing punching, kicking, and open handed strikes. The beginnings of karate formed in an island south of Japan, Okinawa. Robert Braff learned and practiced Okinawan karate under Professor Moore from 1976 to 1978. Okinawans travelled to China, learning Chinese martial arts, and blended there own style of martial arts from what they'd learned. This blend of martial arts was called To-De, translating to "Chinese Hands". It was from this blend that the four main styles of karate took shape in the 16th century. From these styles, Japan then adopted a style known as Shotokan in the early 20th Century.  Different karate styles continued to develop, and popularity grew, especially after releases of several karate films in the 1960's and 1970'2. There are now hundreds of styles of karate from around the globe that one may learn.
