Follow on Google News | Giro Celebrates Lance Armstrong With New Helmet CollectionWith 7 overall victories, 19 stage wins and 83 days in yellow since 1999, the Tour’s greatest champion is celebrated by its most winning helmet brand
The Lance Armstrong Collection is based on Giro’s composite-reinforced Ionos helmet and will sell for $235 each. The two models in the Lance Armstrong Collection will be available at independent bicycle dealers in the fall of 2010. “Lance dominated the Tour so completely for so long and has worked so hard to battle cancer that we had to do something to celebrate all that he means to the sport and those touched by cancer around the world,” said Giro’s Senior Sports Marketing Manager, Chuck Platt. “Lance has continually pushed us and helped us to make our helmets better and this new collection is a simple way that we can show how grateful we are to him.” Clad in Giro helmets for all of his record-setting seven Tour victories, Armstrong has spent 83 days in yellow and has 19 stage wins to his credit. Armstrong has been racing the 2010 Tour de France in a helmet from the Lance Armstrong Collection that features a graphic design created by Giro’s in-house design team and has large, block numbers that represent every year Armstrong won the Tour and incorporates his signature into the colorful, artistic design. The second model features the red-and-gray colors of Armstrong’s RadioShack kit with his name in block letters. Both versions feature silver composite reinforcements between a many of the helmet’s vents and color-matched straps. The Armstrong collection is built on top of Giro’s Tour-winning Ionos, a helmet that features 21 Wind Tunnel vents and the new Roc Loc 5 fit system. The Ionos has vents that are the largest ever carved into a helmet and are made possible due to an in-molded composite sub-frame (I.C.S.). The massive vents, coupled with an intricate network of internal channels create an ultra-efficient cooling system dubbed Wind Tunnel ventilation. The Ionos also comes in a full range of non-Armstrong Collection colors that also sell for $235. Armstrong is riding his second Tour de France since coming out of retirement in the beginning of 2009 and rides for a team sponsored by American electronics retailer RadioShack. The 2,234-mile 2010 Tour de France started on Saturday, July 3rd in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and ends on Sunday, July 25th in Paris, France. Armstrong will leave the tour as the rider with the greatest number of overall victories ever at a total of seven.
