Host Terri Sewell Salutes Father With Free Youth Basketball Clinic Featuring Major Collegiate Coaches At A. G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club In Historic Birmingham, Alabama
 
July 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Birmingham, AL USA -  Glaudé Productions Client Terri Sewell hosts Georgetown University Head Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III and Alabama State University (ASU) Coach Lewis Jackson as well as other noted collegiate coaches and special guests gather in the Magic City to participate in "The Coach Andrew A. Sewell Youth Basketball Clinic."  The clinic is in honor of Sewell's father, retired coach of Selma High School Coach Andrew A. Sewell.  Thompson, Jackson and others will conduct a one-day clinic - free to 100 youth -- as a prelude to the renaming of the Selma High School Gymnasium in Selma, Al in honor of Terri Sewell's father.

Terri Sewell, a Birmingham attorney and democratic candidate for the 7th Congressional district, is a strong advocate for the development of youth and is pleased to provide an opportunity for our youth to participate free of charge in a basketball clinic, where they can spend time working with and learning from collegiate level coaches.  Sewell is a native of Selma, Al whose mother Nancy Sewell served on the Selma City Council and father, now retired Coach Andrew Sewell, coached at Selma High School for 30 years before suffering a series of strokes that left him in a wheelchair and caused his early retirement.  Her father played at ASU and Coach Lewis Jackson and her brother, Assistant Coach Anthony Sewell are also participating.  Coach Andrew A. Sewell will also be in attendance.  Sewell remarks, “Basketball is in my blood!  I am just honored that these great coaches would join me in promoting this sport and giving our children this unique opportunity.  I am also happy that my college friend Coach John Thompson would travel to Birmingham and join with these outstanding coaches, to participate in this clinic for our children, honoring my father.  What a great tribute!"  

The renaming of the Selma High School Gymnasium in the name of Sewell’s father will take place on August 15, 2009 in Selma, AL.   “The Coach Andrew A. Sewell Youth Basketball Clinic” being held in Birmingham welcomes one hundred (100) youth, totally free of charge.  Pre-registration is required.  Applications are available at The A. G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club from July 27th through July 31st.

John Thompson (JTIII) begins his fifth season as men's basketball coach at Georgetown University working on his second hundred wins, having compiled a record of 100- 36 (.735 %) in his first four years at GU. A two-time winner of the BCA (Black Coaches Association) Male Coach of the Year, Thompson has been named 2007 NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Coach of the Year. Last season his team earned a 28-6 (.823%) mark, going 15-3 in BIG EAST play to garner their second consecutive Regular season championship (a feat previously unmatched in Hoya history). His team appeared in the national polls all 20 weeks of the season, never dropping lower than twelfth and senior Patrick Ewing Jr. earned the inaugural BIG EAST 6th Man award. The Hoyas maintained their streak of appearing in post-season play every year under Thompson, making their third consecutive NCAA tournament in four years (3 NCAA's, 1 NIT) Overall Thomson, has amassed records of: 168-78 (.682) ; five league championships and seven post-season appearances in his eight years as a head coach.

During Thompson's third season as Georgetown's head coach, JTIII saw his Hoyas win the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, the BIG EAST Tournament Championship as well as the NCAA East Regional Championship while compiling a 30-7 record. In 2006-07 the Hoyas appeared in the national polls 18 times, defeated seven nationally ranked opponents and compiled a conference record of 13-3.  Coach Thompson saw Junior Jeff Green named BIG EAST Player of the Year, MVP of the BIG EAST Tournament and MVP of the NCAA East Regional. Green was the fifth player selected in the 2007 NBA Draft.
                                       
Prior to coaching at Georgetown, Thompson guided Princeton to three Ivy League Championships, two NCAA tournaments and an NIT appearance over his four years as head coach. He amassed a 68-42 record as Princeton's head coach after serving as an assistant coach at Princeton from 1995- 2000. As assistant coach, he helped lead the team to a Top 10 national ranking and five consecutive post-season appearances.

Thompson also played basketball as an undergraduate for the Tigers while majoring in politics. As a forward, he ranks third on Princeton's all time assist leader list with 358. Playing for legendary coach Pete Carril, Thompson performed with amazing proficiency with 103 assists and just 34 turnovers as a senior. He was co-captain of the 1988 team and shared the B. F. Bunn trophy that year as one of the Tigers' Most Valuable Players.

Thompson's wife Monica is also a Princeton grad (Class of '89). They have three children: Morgan, age 10; John Wallace, age 7; and Matthew age 5.

ABOUT RETIRED SELMA HIGH SCHOOL COACH ANDREW A. SEWELL:

Coach Andrew A. Sewell retired from Selma High School in June, 1997 after 36 years of coaching and teaching.  A native of Selma, Sewell was a standout athlete at Alabama State University, lettering in four (4) sports: basketball, football, track and golf; serving as Captain of the football team his senior year at ASU.

Coach Sewell's athletic prowess, competitive spirit, determination and strong work ethic exemplified the true essence of sportsmanship.  As a young African American athlete, Sewell was named to All-City, All-County and All-District in both sports. For his hard work, as an athlete, he earned a four-year scholarship to Alabama State University.  Sewell received his bachelors degree from ASU in 1961 and went on to earn his masters degree from ASU in 1971.  Sewell was captain of the football team leading them to a conference champion his sophomore year and earning him the "Most Outstanding Athlete" award.

From playing golf in college to semi-professional tournaments, Sewell soon earned a reputation during the 1970's as one of the leading golfers in the southeast. His playing success led to numerous first, second and third placements in golf tournaments all across Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. Sewell's impressive golfing career included winning over 90 trophies. His struggles and successes on the golfing circuit during the 1970's and 1980's paved the way for likes of Tiger Woods.

Sewell began his coaching career in 1961 - and began coaching at Selma High School in the 1970's.  During his career, he led the Selma High Saints to the High School area or State Playoffs 12 out of 19 years.  COACH Sewell held the position of head Golf Coach, head Track Coach, head Football and Basketball Coach.  Sewell compiled an impressive 465 win - 161 loss record. During his heyday, he made Selma High history by putting together seven back-to-back 20 game winning seasons during his first eight years as head coach. He led the Selma High Saints to two state runner-up finishes and two third place finishes in Alabama high school 6-A state tournaments and was voted Coach of the Year three times.
