Retro Art - Recycling an era with recycled art from recycled parts

July 22, 2010 - PRLog -- The Woodlands, TX - What goes around, comes around. In fashion, decorating, and even art. This is one of the underlying themes at the Artist Expo Houston Convention being held this week thru Saturday, at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. The retro revival in art is not only recycling the pop culture from the 1960s, but creating it from recycled materials.

One such artist spearheading this retro art is Dawn Binette from Cerrillos, New Mexico. She not only produces creative pieces like the iconic peace symbol reminiscent of the pop art of that era, but in the style that defined the hippie culture…flowers, hearts, and psychedelic colors. “It’s not just recycling the terms and style, but getting people to really embrace these concepts and take them to a higher level of consciousness,” states Binette. Spoken like a true artist. Binette's one-of-a-kind creative pieces include wall hangings, unique jewelry, and decorative vases from antique bottles of which she has researched their origin. Nothing is wasted…wishbones, horseshoes, sardine and Altoid boxes. Tin roofs and old fencing are especially prized as canvasses.

This ‘eco-friendly’ art is the direct result of the conscience effort to minimize the amount of material going into landfills and paint positive affirmations on. Embellishing the art with the words ‘peace’ and ‘love’ enable people to reflect on them daily, and hopefully reinforce them. Her inventory not only has a nostalgic feel to it, but a poignant one; and in the words of one aging hippie to another, she added “it’s just groovy.”

Also on display are works of art from local and regional artists, and a vast array of art supplies from quality sources. The Marriott has set up a concession booth, and massage therapist, Babs Dewhurst, is literally ‘on hand’ providing chair massages to weary exhibitors as well as attendees. To tour the Artist Expo Houston Convention exhibit hall is only $5, but you can obtain a free pass by printing one out from the website at www.artistexpohouston.com
