Sony is making a big push to make 3D console gaming ubiquitous, but Microsoft and Nintendo are both taking a more wary wait-and-see approach in regard to 3D TV adoption rates. But according to Ubisoft's estimation, it won't take long for 3D TV purchases to hit critical mass -- just a short three years, to be exact.

"The truth is I think it is a technology that's coming," said Ubisoft UK marketing boss Murray Pannel to Eurogamer. "We can't ignore it. It'll start slowly this year. But like HDTV I wouldn't rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone's living room in three year's time, and for us to be in a position to have content that could really look absolutely amazing in 3D."
A recent survey of Japanese consumers appears to show conflicting data with this prediction, however, as it showed low purchasing intent for 3D TVs in the country. But for those who do still doubt the potential for 3D games, Pannel had a message: "'Just watch this space', because when you have global corporations like Sony pushing 3D as hard as they possibly can, Sky, equally, showcasing 3D content on TV, I believe it will become a much more important part of consumer electronics than a lot of people believe."
Pannel did also make clear that that's "not to say every game needs to be in 3D." But according to a past Ubisoft prognostication, it will be at least half -- the developer also recently said that 50 percent of all games will be played in 3D by 2012.
