Follow on Google News | South Bay Women’s Fashion Swap Celebrates One-Year Anniversary, 100 Plus Members Since InceptionFashion Swap Group Spawned on Meetup.com, Women Attend Monthly Exchange Events To Trade Clothes, Stories & Friendship
By: South Bay Women's Fashion Swap “I am so pleased that in one short year, we have grown to a diverse group of more than 100 women from all over the Bay Area, and in the process, my wardrobe changes on an ongoing basis!” said Tina Casalino, Creator and Event Organizer for South Bay Women’s Fashion Swap. “Given the current unstable economic conditions, this group has served as a viable avenue to bring Bay Area women together, once a month, not just to swap clothes, but also to help form new friendships while donating to local causes. It is truly thrilling to continue to host these clothing exchanges for the foreseeable future, although I think we will soon need to find a larger venue to accommodate our group as we continue to increase our membership.” The monthly swaps take place in San Jose, where all sizes of trendy and fashionable women’s clothing are welcome, from extra-small to plus-size, 0-14 and up, along with shoes, jewelry, purses and other fashion accessories. There is a minimum requirement of 15 items that each swapper must bring, with no maximum number. Current, stylish items are required, but cool vintage items are also welcome. An average swap for the group usually has about 30 women attending, and can range anywhere from 500 to 1,000 items for trade. Once everyone has taken as much as they would like, the remaining clothes are gone through and sorted for future swaps, while all the rest of the items are packaged up and delivered to various donation centers around the Bay Area including HOPE and Lucile Packard’s Children Hospital. The only cost to swappers is $1, which is applied to the snacks and beverages served at the swap, along with helping to cover the $19 fee a month Meetup.com charges to organizers of Meetup groups. Most of the women who attend the swaps range in age from their early to mid-twenties, to early forties. Sarah Clair, a member of the group who has attended several of the swaps in the past few months, thinks that swapping is one of the most cost-effective ways to edit a closet without breaking the bank. She has come away from the swaps with everything from clothing with tags still on them to jewelry, shoes, purses – even a Harry Potter Halloween costume. “If you want new clothes but don't want to spend the money, this group is for you,” she said at a recent swap meeting. Upcoming clothing exchanges for the group include one taking place at the end of July, and another scheduled for Sunday, August 29th. The July swap is already full with a wait list available for members to sign up for, but there is still space left for the August 29 swap. With the current economic conditions, times can be tough, so the purpose of this group is to get rid of items you no longer need, and instead trade for something you do. We are currently accepting new members in the Bay Area who are interested in trading their fashion items, love to shop, and want to meet new women and make friends all while swapping.
