New Market Research Report: West & Central Africa Telecommunications Report Q3 2010

New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "West & Central Africa Telecommunications Report Q3 2010"

July 22, 2010 - PRLog -- The Q310 West and Central Africa Telecommunications report contains market data analysis updates for seven of the largest mobile markets in this region. It also includes overviews of the fixed-line and internet markets, although in general limited data is available about these, and the markets remain very small and slow to develop on the internet side, and declining in general on the fixed-line side. We have also updated out forecasts for this region, which provide five year projections for the number of mobile, fixed-line and broadband subscribers in a country, as well as the number of internet users. Regional company profiles are also included in this report, as well as BMI popular Business Environment Ratings, which compare the various pros and cons of investing in the mobile markets of Sub-Saharan Africa, and place the seven countries in this report is relation to others in the region.

These markets are not on the whole very competitive or fast moving, although rates of growth have been high. Cote d'Ivoire stands out as one of the most dynamic markets in this region, with multiple operators and several strong players. It is little wonder that France Telecoms chose this country in which to launch its Orange Money mobile payment service. Sadly no data is available on the rate of take up, but the operator is planning an expansion, and has said it is pleased with the success of the scheme Both Gabon and Senegal have seen an increase in competition in recent quarters, both having seen the launch of an additional mobile operator. Expresso is growing in Senegal, but has not made a massive dent in the market yet. Azure Gabon, a subsidiary of Bintel in the most advanced market in region, was forced to shut down just a few weeks after launching in Q309. It has since come online again, but the hiccup seems to have left its mark.

Cameroon has announced plans to auction one or two more mobile licences. BMI welcomes this news as, as a duopoly, Cameroon is sadly under competitive. A new operator, preferably one of the big names, may enliven the market and bring about welcome new growth.

Vodacom is having some problems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where it is embroiled in a long-running ownership dispute with a subsidiary company. The South African firm, now majority owned by the UK's Vodafone, is considering pulling out of the country if the dispute is not settled soon.

The DRC is potentially an extremely lucrative market. However, there are obvious and considerable security and practicality problems with operating in such a large, unstable and geographically diverse country. Vodacom does remain the market leader, but apparently this is not enough of a draw to keep it there.
